WHAT WE CAN LEARN FROM "FROZEN" - The power of a song
If you know me personally you will know that I LOVE all things Disney. (Sorry Disney haters). I love DisneyLand. I love The Little Mermaid. And let’s not forget FROZEN!
I hope I haven’t lost you….hang in there…what I love most about the movie FROZEN is the story behind the feature song of the movie – a story I only just found out about this week.
I was watching a documentary on the movie (I told you I was Disney addicted). The original story line was different than the movie that ended up on the big screen.
In the original story taken from the children’s book “The Snow Queen”, Elsa was the evil queen wanting to wreak havoc with all things ice.
Husband-and-wife songwriting team Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez wrote the songs our kids won’t stop singing. The feature hit “Let it Go”, was stumbled upon when Robert wrote the little musical riff we hear in the intro of the song. As he began to play, his wife began to sing: “The snow glows white on the mountain tonight, not a footprint to be seen”…and just like that, an incredible song was born.
But wait…. there was a problem……
This is not a song that an evil queen would sing.
This is a song that reveals a broken woman, one who is misunderstood so puts up walls so she can no longer hurt anyone.
A woman who decides she can no longer hide who she is and abandons the charade of being what is expected to truly become herself.
A strong woman letting go and surrendering to the authenticity of being who she really is.
This doesn’t sound like an evil queen at all, but rather a hurt, lonely young woman who finally knows her identity.
This of course put the producers in a spin. The song had power in it, the song was moving. They could feel the song. But where was it going to fit? This is not what they had in mind.
And….just like that – a song changed a story.
A story was built around a song.
And that is how FROZEN came to be.
As I was listening to the history of this epic story, I felt the Lord say to me: “If you don’t like your story, change your song.” Well, that got my attention.
That is why we sing. That is why we write. That is why we re-write. That is why we speak out words that bring life.
We can rewrite our destiny! Call forth the truth that was among us all along, but was hidden because of everyone elses story of our lives.
Maybe if we want to change our story, we need to change what we are singing.
