CS Lewis once famously said: “It is a good rule, after reading a new book, never to allow yourself another new one till you have read an old one in between.”
What I believe this to mean is- those new thought processes, that new story or idea... it needs to be measured by the wisdom that has gone before us. When we do this it increases our scope of understanding.
Why? Because every time stamp brought a different perspective because of the era and context the author found themselves in.
You might not agree with everything you read, but I believe it is utterly foolish not to at least be ‘learn-ed’ of what stream of thought has gone before us.
Now, imagine if we used this approach in the prophetic!
This is something I do. I don’t just read the latest post on Facebook (which I love by the way so this is in no means an attack).... but what did the prophets say 5,10,50 100, even 500 years ago?
What about words spoken, visions seen, dreams revealed from all over the world- not just your own nation?
Here are some things that happen when you do this:
- You understand the prophetic in context
- You see patterns and promises over decades and eras;
- You become more tolerant of those who don’t agree with you
- You learn about the character and lifestyle of those who received these downloads and can think about how to apply them to your own life
- You see a bigger picture
I believe God is wanting to restore the ancient ways, unveiled in new revelation!
Time to start reading....
